Mustangs Position Themselves For Twentieth Win With 73-35 Victory Over Outmanned St. Patrick Jason Cooper Leads Ten Mustangs In Scoring Column With 15 - Kevin Smith Tallies 12 As Mustangs Win Their 19th of the Season
There are few easy games on the Mustangs schedule this year, so when one comes along, our guys take advantage. Last night in Maysville the Mustangs placed ten scorers in the scorebook enroute to a 73-35 win over outmanned St. Patrick. The Win was our 19th against five losses and will give Coach Willie Schlarman added fuel for the Highlands fire as two milestones can be set on Saturday night at Highlands. The Mustangs could win their twentieth game of the season and Coach Willie Schlarman could beat the Bluebirds for the first time in his seven year tenure. The Mustangs opened the game with a 12-0 run, which established Brossart's dominance and we pretty much cruised from there. St. Patrick's managed four points in the first quarter as opposed to the 22 put up by the Stangs. By halftime the Mustangs lead had grown to 34-13 and this one was over. The Mustangs, who played the entire unit liberally in the second half, while in a 3-2 zone for the most part, continued to outscore the Saints 39-22 in the second half which accounts for the 73-35 final score. The Mustangs hit on 9 3-point goals in the contest. Jason Cooper led ten Mustangs scorers with 15 points, including a pair of long-range 3-point jumpers. Kevin Smith had a double figure performance with 12, Ryan Anderson and Steve McCarthy posted 9 apiece as each hit a pair of 3-balls, Big Dawg Derrick Rhoden scored 8 points including a pair of slam-dunks, Rob Doyle and Nick Clark added 5 each, Kyle Lubbers and Evan McDole put in 4 each, and Brad Seiter added a duece to round out the Mustangs scoring. St. Pats was led by Senior Jess Poe who had 13 points. No other Saint had more than 4 points. The varsity Mustangs break a two-game losing streak with the win, their 19th of the season against 5 losses and could become the fourth team in the seven year Willie Schlarman era to win 20 games with a victory over Highlands in Fort Thomas on Saturday night.
JVs Extend Win Streak To Eleven With 65-17 Domination of St. Patrick
JV Coach Bob Rowe brought the entire Freshmen nation to Maysville on Friday night and nine of the ten of them received some quality JV playing time. Seven of them made their way into the scoring column and one did not see action, due to an official who refused to look beyond his rulebook, even when the score was 54-14 and both participating parties had agreed to a duplicate numbers arrangment. Adam Franzen was on fire hitting four three point goals enroute to a 14 point outing. He led twelve total Mustangs in scoring. The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 18-4 first quarter advantage and it was all down-hill from there. The Stangs led 37-11 at the half, 52-13 after three periods and 65-17 when the game came to a merciful conclusion. In addition to Franzen, Nathan Mutch contributed 9 points, Michael Schenk had 7, Josh Kidney and Troy Cooper had 6 apiece, Brad Seiter, Kyle Lubbers, and Michael Collins banged in 4 each, Luke Rebholz and Nick Clark all put up 3, and Matt Lloyd hit a layup for 2 points to account for the Mustangs 65 points. The JVs hit a total of seven three-point goals among them. They now improve to 16-2 on the season and will face a stiff test on Saturday night in Fort Thomas, versus the Highlands Bluebirds.
