The Varsity Mustangs put an exclamation point on their regular season with a solid 77-41 win over the Simon Kenton Pioneers on Senior Night where Derrick Rhoden and Rob Doyle were playing in their final home game as a Mustang. Doyle and Rhoden responded by combining for 20 points, Rhoden putting up 14 and Doyle 6. The senior duo was responsible for the first seven points of the game, putting the Mustangs in the lead that they would never relinquish. The Mustangs increased their lead to 15-2 midway through the first period as Ryan Anderson drilled a pair of 3s enroute to a 22-6 first quarter lead. Brossart did not let up in the second quarter putting 20 more points on the board, led by Evan McDole who was responsible for eight of those points, extending our lead to 42-20 by halftime.
There was no letdown in the third quarter as the Mustangs continued their torrid scoring pace recording 22 more points, on the merits of 14 points from the big man corps of McDole-Rhoden, six points from Kevin Smith and a bucket by Brett Reilly, to open up a 64-28 advantage.
Coach Willie Schlarman cleared the Mustangs bench in the fourth quarter as each and every Mustang dressed for the contest made an entry in the scorebook. Brossart again continued their dominance over the Pioneers, leading by 40 points at one point 70-30, outscoring the 'Neers 15-11 enroute to the 77-41 win, our twenty-third of the season vs five losses.
The Mustangs were led in the scoring department by Evan McDole with 15 points. Evan now has 942 career points and has dead aim on becoming the next Mustang to join the elite THOUSAND POINT CLUB. Derrick Rhoden had a big night on Senior night with 14 points. Jason Cooper hit double digits with 10 points including a pair of 3-balls. Three Mustangs scorers put six points on the board, Rob Doyle, Ryan Anderson (with three-pointers number 30 and 31), and Kevin Smith. Brett Reilly contributed 5 points; Michael Schenk 4; Brad Seiter, Nick Clark, and Steve McCarthy 3 each; and Adam Franzen 2. Kyle Lubbers experienced some shortness of breath following the JV game and did not play in the varsity event. No Simon Kenton player scored double figures.
The Mustangs will now begin the "second season" on Wednesday night (March 3rd) in the 38th District Tournament vs Bracken County at 6pm at the Campbell County Middle School. The Mustangs received a favorable draw which will require them to defeat the Polar Bears on Wednesday to advance to the tournament finals on Friday night, March 5th and receive an automatic bid to the annual rites of spring at the Mason County Fieldhouse in the 10th Region Tournament the week of March 8th. |
