McCarthy, McDole, and Smith Shine On Evan Night
Beat Juggernauts 56-42

Janury 13, 2005
The Brossart Mustangs played a brilliant two and a half-quarters vs Erlanger Lloyd on Thursday night opening up a 39-15 lead before the game turned ugly and the Mustangs slugged it out for a 56-42 NKAC Division II Conference win over the tenacious Juggernauts on "Evan McDole Night."

Giving that this was only our second game in two weeks and that we were reaquiainting ourselves with Evan McDole and Kevin Smith being back in the lineup, we'll give our Mustangs the benefit of the doubt and render judgement after the Newport game on Saturday night.

What started out being plans to simply present Evan McDole and his family with the game ball used to score his 1,000th point at Clark County back on December 17th turned into a full-blown pagent when Mustang 1,000 Point Club member Mark Cuthrell suggested that we try to bring back all of the members of the Thousand Point Club to congratulate Evan on his special night.  Even on short notice nine of eleven of our living members of the 1,000 Point Club were able to attend and were on hand to participate in the presentation ceremonies.

While it was McDole night, it was Steve McCarthy who stole the show in the first half putting up eight of his game/career high sixteen points in the second quarter, assuring the Mustangs a 24-14 lead at the half.   McDole put in the kind of night we've come to expect from him, fourteen points, with seven in the first quarter and a myraid of rebounds and assists to go along with his scoring statistics.  The two McMustangs combined for 30 of our total 56 points on the night.

Kevin Smith returned to the Mustangs lineup showing no ill-effects of having been out of action for the past three weeks, picking right up where he left off back on December 17th against Fleming County when he was injured, by hitting a three-pointer and two jumpers of the standard variety in the first quarter, combining with McDole and Jason Cooper to produce the Mustangs 15-7 lead after the first stanza.  Smith finished the night with eleven points on four field-goals and two free-throws.

While the Mustangs were never in any critical danger in the second half, the Juggs did make a couple of runs cutting our lead to 46-35 midway through the fourth quarter before being turned away by our Mustangs who went on to win by fourteen, 56-42.

The JV and Varsity Mustangs will host the Newport Wildcats on Saturday in another NKAC Division II contest.
