Mustangs Go Down Fighting Vs Campbell County In 38th District Finals
43-34
The Brossart Mustang Freshmen and the Campbell County Camels were operating off of two seperate agendas Saturday afternoon in the 38th District Championship game.  The Camels were looking for a blow-out.  Why not, they had run roughshod over their little brother neighbor back on December the Eighth, handing them a 48-25 loss which could have been worse and were coming off of a fifty point demolition of the Pendleton County Wildcats on the previous Thursday in the opening round of the tournament and they were acutely aware that the Mustangs would be playing without the services of their two leading scorers from their previous encounter.
The senerio played out quite differently however, as Coaches Schack and Bezold had provided the Mustangs with a game-plan, which the team executed to perfection and ran out to a 10-2 lead stunning the Camels and thier fans.  The vaunted press which resulted in a myraid of turnovers in December converted to Mustang layups as the Mustangs merely threw over it.
It was quite evident how the Mustangs were spending their daily two hour practice sessions - improving and learning to play Mustang defense, whereas it wasn't as noticable for the home team who continued to rely on their height, maturity, and athleticism to achieve success.
In the second quarter the Camels sensed the urgency and responded with a 20 point quarter allowing them to take a 22-19 lead to the locker room at the half.  Curtis Ruberg hit six consecutive free-throws in the second period as the Mustangs only mananged a single field-goal after amassing five during the first stanza.  Campbell eased away 31-24 after three quarters but the Mustangs battled back cutting the Camel lead to four a minute and a half out.
While Campbell prevailed 43-34 it was the Brossart Mustangs who felt better about their efforts than did the District Champion Camels some of who I spoke to immediately following the game and who credited the Mustang defensive effort as being responsible for being held in check.
Matt Moore provided a pair of field-goals in the first quarter to help establish the Mustang lead and two more in the fourth quarter to rally the Mustangs and keep his team in contention.  Ruberg led the Mustangs with 12 points on the day, connecting on 7 of 8 from the charity stripe.  He shared game scoring honors with Woodruff and Andy Franzen of Campbell County who also put up 12 each.
Jeremy Beckerich, while giving up inches in the paint to his Campbell County counterparts and played like a true warrior throughout the latter part of the season in Greg Stortz's absence.
The Mustangs finish their freshmen season with a respectable 7-13 record and were playing their best basketball when they were suppose to - at tournament time.
This team will go down in Mustang history as perhaps the greatest overachievement in our long list of overachieving freshmen teams.
Coach Schack told his team in an emotional Mustang locker-room following the game that he couldn't have been prouder to coach them in his first year as a high school coach.

   Congratulations to the Freshmen Mustangs!!!!!
