The 2007 Sts. Peter and Paul Cardinals conjured up memories of former championship Cardinal teams   of the 90's that, led by Nathan and Justin Seiter, Curtis Bezold, Dave Enzweiler, a Brossart and others who slip my mind, crossed the Ohio River and earned championship trophies by defeating the best the Queen City Parochial curcuit had to offer.

On Sunday night in the championship game of the St. Mary tournament played in the Thomas H.
Seither Sportcenter at Brossart High School, another of those GCL feeder schools, Our Lady of
Lourdes, an Elder feeder from Delhi, invaded the SyDome and were sent back across the river empty handed.

In one of the better 8th Grade games played in this venerable institution, the Cardinals effectively
bombed them, hitting on nine 3-Point goals, four coming frrom Ben Rawe, to defeat the big school
Tigers 39-33, with the entire Brossart Mustangs basketball staff in the house taking in the show.

The Tigers overwhelmingly won the battle of two point field-goals outscoring the Cardinals 22-10
from in close, but the Cardinals dominated the game from beyond the arc, besting the Tigers 27-6 from three-point range.  In addition to having Rawe hit a three in each of the four quarters, Michael Kramer and Luke Dischar buried two apiece, and Nick Woeste planted one to account for the sum total of long- range Cardinal bombs.

The Cardinals took three of the four quarters outscoring their opponents 14-8 in the first period, 10-9 in the second, 10-8 in the third stanza, yielding to the Tigers 5-8 in the finale.

With John Schack and Joe Franzen controlling the boards, Michael Kremer and Luke Dischar
effectively getting their team up and down the floor and finding the open man, and Ben Rawe, Kremer, Dischar, and Woeste blazing away from beyond the arc, it is no surprise that these Cardinals have drawn the attention of the Mustangs' basketball coaching staff.  It was a team such as this that provided  the Mustangs with the nucleus of the championship caliber program that we enjoyed in the late 90's and  into 2000 when we went to Rupp.  Combined with the potential of the present freshmen Mustangs and the talent coming our way from the the other area feeder schools, this class has the opportunity to build such a championship caliber program.

The remaining members of the Cardinals squad are Colton, Connor, and Ethan Boesch, Jacob Carmack, and Michael Krutzkamp.  Matthew Martin serves as assistant coach, Hilary Boesch keeps the stats, and Stephen Verst is the ballboy.

The Cardinals will travel to the St. Williams tournament in Cincinnati next week where they will have a  rematch with these same Lourdes Tigers.

Congratulations to Coach Jim Verst and his Cardinals and best of luck in the future!!!
