In the battle of two teams seeking their first varsity football victory, the Brossart Mustangs were left in the gate, falling behind 14-0 early on in the first quarter and never recovered, losing to Walton-Verona 38-7.
Two weeks ago, Owen County won the toss and elected to defer reception until the second half, which almost turned out to be a fatal error, as the Mustangs controlled the ball for nearly the entire first half. Today the Walton-Verona Bearcats won the toss and wisely elected to recieve. Both teams went four and out, but on their second possession, the Bearcats pinned the Mustangs deep in their own territory on a punt that rolled dead on the Brossart 6 yard line. Following our set of downs and a short punt took over possession on the Brossart 24 and a few plays later punched the ball in on a Cameron Reynolds quarterback sneak making it a 7-0 lead following the first of five successful extra points at the 7:21 mark of the first period. An intercepted Tony Woeste pass resulted in a 33 yard runback by Colton McIntyre for a second Walton touchdown and a 14-0 Brossart deficit. Brossart failed to mount any serious threats as the Bearcats tacked on a pair of second period touchdowns and a field-goal, taking a 31-0 lead at halftime.
Following a scoreless third period that saw Brossart drive down to the Walton 9 yard line, 1st and goal, but fail to convert, both teams put a touchdown on the board. Walton scored on an 11 yard run by Colton McIntyre while Brossart took an ariel route to the endzone as Spencer Brown completed a 40 yard pass play to Ian Sevier (Mustangsports.org reports it was Drew Braunwart) making it a 38-7 game, ending the scoring for the afternoon.
Congratulations to Coach Woody McMillen and his Walton-Verona Bearcats on their first varsity victory!
