Mustangs Get Passing Grades
In First Outing Of Matt Reinhart Era
Come Out Second Best, 18-6 To Owen County Rebels
At the pre-game coin toss, the Owen County Rebels won that toss but elected to defer possession until the start of the second half.
This was a decision that appeared might come back to haunt them, as Brossart put on an offensive exhibition after taking possession at our own 37 yard line, which would see them reel off four consecutive first downs, penetrating all of the way to their goal line before coming up empty and turning the ball over to the Rebels on downs.
The Rebels would run their one and only play from scrimmage in the quarter, a pass play that was sniffed out and picked off
by sophomore Connor Boesch, giving his team possession on the Owen County 27 yard line, from where we moved the ball to the 2 yard line - 1st and Goal.  A play or two later, Spencer Brown scored the first Brossart Mustangs touchdown of the season, on a keeper, putting his team on top 6-0.  The PAT attempt was wide right.
A 2nd quarter pass interception by Owen County and six first downs by the Rebels, resulted in a 13-6 halftime deficit.
Brossart turned back a serious Owen County scoring threat to open the second half, as a touchdown was called back on a blocking violation, and when Connor Boesch intercepted his second Rebel pass of the night, the Mustangs had  dodged the bullet.
The Mustang eleven failed to generate sufficient offense in the ensuing set of downs, setting up a punt situation.  An errant snap, over  the head of the Mustang punter resulted in a safety, making it a 15-6 ballgame, and a late third period field-goal by the Rebels, capped the scoring in the football game.
The Mustangs offense draws passing grades for their versatility, execution, and effectivenesss, but the passing game needs some work, as Spencer Brown was chased out of the pocket repeatedly, resulting in several serious losses of yardage.
The Brossart defense had their moments, but continued to give up the "big play" which haunted them throughout the pre-season scrimmages.
Coach Matt Reinhart will have  two weeks to iron out the wrinkles, as a result of the upcoming bye week,  before the Mustangs entertain Walton-Verona back at Newport Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 13th.
