| Hope springs eternal each football Friday or Saturday that this might be the breakthrough week, but that was not the case on this night as the 2-A Newport Wildcats were far superior to our first year Mustangs, regardless of how their win-loss record read prior to kickoff. Our Mustangs defense line was simply not up to the challenge of Newport's offensive line resulting in touchdowns on four of Newport's five offensive series in the first half, and a 28-0 deficit at intermission. On a positive note, the Mustangs secondary did not give up a big play "runaway" touchdown, and punter Greg Stortz who liberally exercised his kicking talents, did a masterful job of kicking the ball either out of bounds or just inside the sidelines which prevented big run backs. The Mustangs forced a big turnover early in the second quarter when Greg Stortz hit Newport quarterback Brandon Housley at full throttle forcing a fumble which Kyle McGrath gobbled up like a starving pit bull, giving the Mustangs good field postion and momentum, but we were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Newport elected to continue to operate with the first team in the second half, which is certainly their prerogative, resulting in two additional touchdowns, making the score 41-0 after three periods complete. As Coach Schlarman used to tell his basketball Mustangs on the rare occasions that they would receive a sound thumping, "If you don't like it - Get Better!" An early fourth quarter Wildcat score made the score 47-0, sending the Newport starters to the sidelines for the remainder of the game and the clock into continuous running mode for our third straight contest. Brossart made their very first first-down of the game at the 9:25 mark, followed by two more in rapid succession, but the drive stalled out at the Newport 25 yard line, and Newport ran out the clock, sending our Mustangs down to our fifth consecutive loss, with hopes for better things to come next week at Ludlow. |
