Brossart Has Two Opponents At Rigney Stadium The Ludlow Panthers And Themselves Exemplify Our School Motto Of Charity First In 46-8 Loss October 5th, 2007
Hope springs eternal on Friday nights. Ludlow had lost the services of their all-region quarterback Jarrett Rouse two games back, and had sustained a demoralizing loss to the seventeen man Pendleton County Wildcats, just a week prior. However, those hopes were dealt a serious blow when we fumbled away the opening kickoff, giving Ludlow some early-game momentum, which they converted three plays later to a Panther touchdown and our Mustangs found themselves trailing 7-0 before two minutes had expired in the first quarter. Two Brossart offensive plays later Andrew Heeg was intercepted in a pass attempt to Tony Woeste, the first of many interceptions that would transpire during the course of this game. The Mustangs defense was up to the task, forcing a Ludlow punt, but the Mustangs failed to capitalize during their set of downs, calling on Greg Stortz's strong right leg and our first punt of the night.
On their third possession of the game, Ludlow marched down the field and put another touchdown on the board on an 18 yard completion into the end zone from quarterback Zach Stegemoller to Tyler Trammel, giving the home team a 13-0 lead with 6:12 still to play in the first quarter. Ludlow repeated the scenerio at the 3:20 mark and suddenly the Mustangs found themselves staring at a 19-0 deficit with three quarters to go. At the onset of the second quarter it was the Brossart Mustangs who took advantage of a Ludlow miscue as the Mustangs blocked a Ludlow punt attempt. Greg Stortz gathered up the loose ball and treked unmolested into the endzone for a Brossart touchdown. Jake Heil connected with his big wide receiver and when Stortz reeled in the pass, the Mustangs found themselves right back in the football game, trailing 19-8. Both teams played scoreless football until late in the half, and it was Brossart who was on the march with only 1:35 left in the half. This was a huge series of downs that would have, at bare minium, sent the Mustangs to the locker room at halftime trailing by only eleven points. However, disaster struck in the form of another pass interception and a play or two later, with 1:05 to go in the half, the Panthers scored - making it 25-8. What had appeared to be a promising drive just seconds earlier now loomed a death knell and bad went to worse when Jake Heil was again intercepted with under a minute to go, and the Mustangs were stunned when Ludlow again penetrated the endzone making the score 33-8 - two touchdowns in less than two minutes. Game, set, match - Ludlow. The second half was basically anti-climatic as the home team tacked on two additional scores, making the final score 46-8. We saw some gutsy ball-carrying by the big sophomore Chris Bowman, and Tony Woeste did his usual blue-collar job carrying the pigskin on the majority of our plays. The freshman John Schack, figured prominently in many Mustang tackles, and Kyle McGrath and Jacob Guidugli both did creditable jobs in the secondary. Evan Harris, Josh Anderson, Aaron Dennis, Zach Richardson, and Nick Bezold worked a lot of overtime and opened some holes tonight in the Ludlow line, while making the majority of tackles while playing on the other side of the ball.
