| Curtain Falls On Inaugural Varsity Season With 31-6 Loss To Gallatin County On Senior Night |
![]() |
| The Brossart Mustangs football team completed their first season of varsity competiton last night at Newport Stadium, falling to the Gallatin County Wildcats 31-6 in a very heated contest, where the Mustangs certainly had their moments. A mishandled opening kickoff pinned the Mustangs back at their own 3 year line on the opening series of the contest. Greg Stortz bailed the Mustangs out of the deep hole with a 32 yard punt, but the Wildcats took advantage of their advantageous field position, punching in a touchdown on their first possession at the 7:11 mark in the first quarter. When the two point conversion was completed the Mustangs found themselves playing from behind 8-0 early on. |
| The Mustangs attempted to answer, stringing three consecutive first downs together but failed to put any points on the board as the first quarter expired with the Cats on top at 8-0. A subsequent touchdown and two-point conversion with 4:16 to play in the first half gave Gallatin County a 16-0 lead. Brossart again mounted a threat just before the half, thwarted by a pass interception, and the half ended with the Mustangs trailing by a pair of touchdowns. The positive take-away from the first twenty-four minutes was that the Mustangs racked up six first downs in the half. The Mustangs fell farther behind at the onset of the second half when the Wildcats marched 64 yards on four first downs and a five yard run by Jared Carlton into the endzone for his third TD of the night. When the conversion succeeded, the Mustangs trailed 24-0. Our Mustangs came alive on their first possession of the second half, marching 56 yards and a touchdown on a three yard quarterback sneak by Jake Heil as the entire Brossart team stormed the field, picking up an "approved" excessive celebration penalty. The now long-distance two point conversion attempt just failed as Greg Stortz was brought down within the shadow of the goal line and the Mustangs were done scoring for the season. Nate Brown tacked on a Wildcat touchdown in the 4th quarter along with a successful extra-point attempt accounting for the final score of 31-6. Brossart closes out our first year of varsity compeition winless, with ten losses. As I said on the broadcast we are very disappointed for all those who comprise the Mustangs football program - but certainly not disappointed in them. They deserved better - but as Coach Schlarman used to say "deserving's got nothing to do with it." If you don't like it - Get better! I am impressed that despite the fact that we were often on the down side of some lopsided scores, had to suffer through oppressive heat, and didn't have a marked regulation field to practice on in our first year - not a single player quit the team. Each player that started out on day one was still in the program on closing night. The returning Mustang footballers not playing a winter sport will take to the weight room to start "getting better" on the Monday after Thanksgiving when they will begin preparations for next season. Our graduating seniors - Tyler Verst, James Schack, Andrew Heeg, Kyle McGrath, Evan Harris, Greg Stortz, Nick Bezold, and Cheerleader Allie Bryan - were honored along with their parents at halftime, as pioneers in this football program and thanked publicly for their contributions to the program. A reception was held for the team, and their parents back at St. Philip following the completion of the football game. Thanks to all concerned for your efforts! It was fun! I'm already looking forward to seeing the football Mustangs back on the gridiron next year. |
