Dayton Dominates The Lines As The Now 8-1 Greendevils Romp To A 56-0 Win Over Our Mustangs October 20, 2007
Dayton used its superior size and experience to dominate the fledgling Brossart Mustangs on Saturday night at Newport Stadium. The senior laden Greendevils demonstrated their offensive prowess by marching 68 yards on their opening drive of the game, gobbling up yardage which resulted in three Dayton first downs and finally a ten yard scamper by Alex Brummett put six points on the board with only 3:19 elasped in the game. When James Trent converted on his first of seven successful PAT attempts, the Mustangs quickly trailed 7-0.
Dayton tacked on two additional touchdowns on both of their successive possessions and the Mustangs found themselves behind 21-0 after twelve minutes of play. Brossart defense held on Dayton's fourth possession, but could generate no meaningful offense against the Dayton defense. Jake Heil showed much poise in completing several short range passes to Drew Braunwart and Greg Stortz, resulting in a pair of Brossart first downs but no numbers on the scoreboard. Heil's offensive line did a great job pass-protecting and gave the Mustang QB sufficient time to execute and connect with his receivers. Dayton would score again at the 6:10 mark in the second quarter and the score at halftime showed the Greendevils in complete command 28-0. Brossart's Chris Bowman forced a late half Dayton fumble on a solid hit, recovered by Tyler Verst, but the Stangs were again unable to capitalize. The Greendevils would match their first half scoring output in the second half, scoring two touchdowns in each of the third and fourth periods. Dayton recorded 13 first downs in the game, while the Mustangs could manage only 3. Dayton used three quarterbacks in the event - Sophomore Justin Sherlock, Senior Brian Ellis, and Sophomore Patrick Schwierjohann. While it didn't show on the scoreboard I felt that the Mustangs played a more complete first half than that witnessed in earlier games this season at Bellevue and Ludlow, two other lesser Class A foes. The offensive and defensive line play was dominated by the Greendevils and all-too-often the Mustangs would have many near-miss arm tackles and getaways resulting in major additional "unearned" yards. Heil showed much maturity standing in the pocket and completing several passes. The Mustangs lost the services of Tony Woeste from the mid-third quarter point on, as a precaution, after having his bell rung.
