2004 MUSTANGS EMBRY-RIDDLE
DAYTONA BEACH TRIP
Day Two  -  Saturday, July 17th
The Brossart Mustangs left the Embry-Riddle dorms this morning at 9am and didn't return until 8pm tonight, playing a steady stream of Varsity and Junior Varsity competition all day mixed in with lunch and dinner and will depart the dorms for a pizza party/slam dunk competition in the ICI Center later tonight at 9pm.  Coach Schabell will forego the sojourne to the pizza party - I'm already pushing the limit on my heartburn medications with camp fare.
The Mustangs, after a good night's sleep, warmed to the task of winning basketball games on Saturday as the Varsity shut out Ocala Forest for the entire first half enroute to a 40-17 victory to begin their first of four contests.  In the second contest the varsity bounced somewhat taking the only loss the program would sustain on Saturday, falling to a physical Jupiter squad 30-24.  The guys in green fell behind early trailing 5-3 after a quarter and 14-8 at the half and never recovered, despite shutting out the locals in the fourth quarter.  Six Mustangs dented the scoring column in that game led by Michael Schenk with 9, Kevin Smith followed with 5, Troy Cooper added 4, and Adam Franzen, Steven McCarthy, and Ja?son Cooper contributed a bucket apiece.
After lunch the varsity recovered from their Jupiter loss by thumping Taravella 51-43.  The Mustangs opened a 10-6 lead after a period and held a tenuous 22-19 lead at the half.  A 16-8 scoring barrage in the third period opened the Mustang lead to 38-27 and from there we cruised to the final score.  Three Mustangs broke double figures in this one as Steven McCarthy broke out with 12 points, including a "3", Kevin Smith put 11 on the board with a 3 and
Ryan Anderson hit a pair of 3's and a couple of free throws for 10.  Rounding out the Mustangs scoring was Jimmy Uebel with 7, Brett Reilly with 5, and Adam Franzen, Jason Cooper, and Michael Schenk with 2 apiece.
The Varsity capped off the day with a quality victory over an extremely athletic, predominantly
black Lake Weir team who came up from Miami.  The Hurricanes used their superior athlethicism
to open a 10-6 first quarter lead, and for the next three quarters the Canes were outplayed,
outsmarted, outcoached, and outclassed by the guys from the little school in Alexandria 36-24.  The
Mustangs took a 17-14 lead at the half, surrendered the lead to fall behind 25-26 after three
quarters then rallied to outscore the frustrated Hurricanes 17-8 by hitting on 14 of 18 free throws
in final stanza to win the game 42-34 and leave the Canes talking to themselves as they departed Fr.
Lopez High School.  Kevin Smith led all Mustangs with 14 points, including 9 in a row in the second half.  Steve McCarthy poured in 9 with a 3 from long-range, Ryan Anderson contributed 8 including a pair of 3s, Brad Seiter, Adam Franzen, and Jason Cooper each put up 3 points apiece, and Brett Reilly rounded out the Mustang scoring with a pair of third quarter free-throws.  The Mustangs were 22 of 31 from the charity stripe for the ballgame.
In this contest, as with each of the games played today, the Stangs primarily employed our traditional standard half-court man-to-man defense, along with a high percentage transition game, and some full court pressure defense.  Each of the varsity Mustangs had some real bright spots and the team as a whole showed some major promise for the coming months ahead.  They played loose, made good decisions, and exhibited good shot selection.

On the Junior Varsity side of the ledger the Mustangs remain undefeated with a 6-0 record after beating Lake Weir and The Rock on Friday night and continued their winning ways into Saturday, going 4-0 on Saturday.
In the opener, which I took in, the JV Stangs, playing without Troy Cooper who was pulling double-duty with the Varsity, defeated Lake Highland in a 9:20am game 42-38.  The Highlanders proved themselves to be worthy adversaries battling the Mustangs toe-to-toe before the victory was won, 42-38.  During the contest a Josh Kidney buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter allowed the Stangs to pull within one at 9-10.  Brossart outscored the Highlanders 9-3 in the second quarter to pull ahead 18-13 at intermission.  Brossart led 31-25 after three periods before the Highlanders sensed the urgency and rallied to tie the game at 34.  A Michael Collins bucket put the Mustangs on top to stay and Josh Kidney connected on 3 of 4 free throws in deep stretch to preserve the JVs third win in three Emery-Riddle Team Camp tries.  Jimmy Uebel was on fire, leading all scorers with 21 points, including a pair of 3s, Nathan Mutsch added 11, Josh Kidney 6, and Michael Collins 4.
The JVs third encounter of the day was a total domination of the West Shore Wildcats from Melbourne Beach, Florida 48-12.  The Cats were never in the ballgame as Brossart opened a 6-1 first quarter advantage and drew off to a 19-2 halftime lead.  A 15-4 Mustang run in the third quarter eliminated any thoughts the Wildcats had of having any success with the Stangs who now led 34-6.  Crowd favorite Michael Collins put six points on the board in the fourth quarter with the varsity in attendance forming the Michael Collins Fan Club.  For the contest Nathan Mutsch led the assault with 10 points, Josh Kidney had 9, Luke Rebholz chipped in 7, Collins finished with 6, Bryan Niemeyer and Kyle Kramer both had 4 and Matt Lloyd nailed a 3 pointer to end the third quarter.
In the JVs final game of the evening played vs Atlantic High School at Atlantic High School, the Mustangs were again tested by the Sharks and bent but never broke as they rallied from behind to beat the Sharks in their house by a 47-38 score to remain undefeated in camp play.
Plans for tomorrow (Sunday) call for the Mustangs to be up early, off to breakfast at about 7am, attend Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 8am, return to pack and check out.  The varsity will take on Oak Ridge, arguably one of the two top teams in the camp (the other being a team from Ft. Lauderdale calling themselves the "Supreme Court") at 10am, while the JVs will head off to Silver Sands High School to face The Rock II.  Since the JVs took apart The Rock I on Friday night, I would suspect that The Rock II might have a rocky start to their Sunday morning at the hands of the Mustangs.
The Camp one and done camp tournament will take place beginning at 11:15am and will go all day until we either emerge victorious or become eliminated following which we will slide over to the beach for a couple of days of "Fun in The Sun."

In looking over my work here, I notice that I failed to report on the JVs second game of the day vs Bishop Kenny.  The Mustangs had no trouble dispatching them 35-22.   As stated earlier, the JVs have been playing a starter short thoughout their six game run.  Troy Cooper was with the varsity when the JVs beat Lake Highland and Bishop Kenny, and Jimmy Uebel was up with the varsity when the JVs beat West Shore and Atlantic.

The weather here today was much as it is often at home in Alexandria ............... partly cloudy, mid-eighties, somewhat muggy, and an occasional scattered shower.   Everyone is having a great time, playing well, and with the exception of Nathan Mutsch, who is playing with a minor sprain in his foot, and Jason Cooper who has re-occuring pain from a pulled groin muscle, we are all happy, hungry, and looking forward to tomorrow's competition.

The quote of the day came from the Lake Weir Varsity fans who passed our school bus and noticed that our graphics read  "BISHOP BROSSART HIGH SCHOOL     NO. 1."   The Weir fans were commenting among themselves that after we played their Wildcats we would be just wishing we were Number One.   Well be careful what you wish for  -  Brossart Beat Lake Weir  42-34.

Next report from the Sunshine Beach Motel  -  Late Sunday Night.
