2004 MUSTANGS EMBRY-RIDDLE
DAYTONA BEACH TRIP
Day Three  -  Sunday, July 18th
This is definitely harder than work  -  or at least work when you are retired

Up at 6:50am/Breakfast at 7:15am/Mass at 8am/Checkout of Dorms by 9:30/Varsity and JV Games beginning at 10am/Three Site Changes/2 Ballgames/Lunch on the Fly/6 Tournament Games/Dinner/Check into motel on the beach/Write Trip Report/Finish Up Just in time for bed.  The good news is that we are here to stay for two days, until our departure on Tuesday, with no specific agenda other than a wiffle ball game, surf football, and our Go Kart Derby scheduled for Monday night after dinner.

The Brossart Mustangs wrapped up their stay and competiton in the Emery-Riddle Camp today, as the JVs captured Brossart High School's first camp championship by defeating Atlantic 39-29 in the finals on the center court of the ICI Center at Embry-Riddle.  The JVs finish their camp stint undefeated at 10-0.  They began their day defeating The Rock II as predicted 45-12 and Coach Bob Rowe was actually nice (Yes, believe it or not Coach Rowe can be nice) to them.  Michael Collins led the JVs with 12 points.  They then entered the toughest bracket in the JV tournament defeating Neace 40-34 in a tough contest in the opening round, and then Jupiter - a 6-A Florida school, 42-28 in the semi-finals and Atlantic in the finals to win our first ever Camp Championship on either level in our four trips down here.

In the championship game, the JV Mustangs held a 7-6 advantage over the Atlantic Sharks after the first quarter, which they extended to 20-12 at intermission.  Matt Lloyd was largely responsible for the Mustang lead drawing numerous fouls and hitting five of his six charity tosses during that decisive 2nd stanza.  Brossart blew out to a 31-21 advantage after three periods and it appeared that the fourth quarter would be a formality.  Not to be.  Six unanswered points by Atlantic to start the fourth quarter cut the Mustang margain to 31-27 and the crowd on hand began to rally behind the local squad.  The Mustangs turned to a superior defensive effort, limiting the Sharks to a lone field goal the rest of the way,  while putting up eight of our own to take down the JV crown, 39-29.  Jimmy Uebel, who had a great week of camp, led the team with 12 points, while Nathan Mutsch, playing with an ouchy foot, probably had a double-double, scoring 10 points and controlling the boards as a man among men.  Troy Cooper, who also held up his end on the boards, put up 8 points and a bunch of boards, Matt Lloyd finished with 5 points, while Luke Rebholz hit a key three-pointer, and Kyle Kramer rounded out our scoring with a free-throw.  The JVs were awarded Camp Championship T-Shirts by Embry-Riddle Head Coach Steve Ridder.

The Varsity had a creditable run, defeating highly touted Oak Ridge 49-33 in their final regular camp game at 10am on Sunday morning.  Since I was still over at the Student Village checking us out of the dorms I missed the first quarter and didn't get to keep game stats.............All I will say is be glad we are who we are, where we are from, and coached by the staff we are coached by.   Our defense totally stymied the wide-open offense of Oak Ridge and our offenses picked them apart.  Even though they were touted to be one of the top teams in the camp, they were never in the game against another top team in the camp, the Brossart Varsity Mustangs.   Brossart led 16-7 at the first quarter stop, 25-13 by the half and the Oak Ridge self-destruction was in high gear.  The Mustangs led 33-20 after three and cruised to the 49-33 victory.  Josh Kidney came up from the JVs for this one and did a yeoman's job with the big team.

In tournament play the Varsity Mustangs swept through Bay Shore and Seabreeze, before being knocked out by a very good Santa Fe squad.

In the Bay Shore game the Mustangs led 11-2 after a quarter and never looked back, winning the contest 41-25.  Michael Schenk, who has earned a lot of respect here in Daytona, showed why he has scored over 1,000 points at the lower levels during his career, led the Mustangs with 13 points.  Brad Seiter was next with 7, Jason Cooper and Ryan Anderson tacked on 5 each, Steve McCarthy scored 4, and Brett Reilly and Kevin Smith added  a bucket each.

Versus Seabreeze, a 29-19 second ha?lf broke open a close contest that saw the Mustangs only on top 17-14 at the half.  Big Steve McCarthy led the Stangs in this one with seven field-goals and two free throws for sixteen points, Ryan Anderson hit a pair of 3s and a free-throw for 7, Adam Franzen and Jason Cooper added 6, Kevin Smith, who went out of the game with a rolled ankle with 3 minutes left in the third period never returned and had five points, while Brad Seiter and Michael Schenk put up three points apiece.

A bad second quarter in the? quarter-finals vs Santa Fe when the Stangs were outscored 22-9, sealed the Mustangs fate in the Varsity tournament.  The Mustangs failed to hit their shots and allowed inside penetration during the fatal second quarter when their opponents hit 9 of 9 free throws and 6 field goals.  After a period the Mustangs only trailed 7-9, and played even at 18-18 in the second half, but could not overcome shoddy officiating, Smitty's ouchy ankle, and the 22 points scored by Santa Fe in the second quarter.

The Varsity Mustangs had a good week at camp beating some quality competition and each player stepped up on different occasions to be leading scorers, rebounders, and playmakers.

We are indebted to Coach Steve Ridder and his staff for providing a first-class experience for our staff and players and bending over backwards to make our schedule work and provide transportation when needed to some of the off-sites.  We will now concentrate on having some fun in the sun for the next couple of days and will head home on Tuesday.

I will put another brief report on our happenings tomorrow night to wrap up our camp experiences for this trip..
