Photo-Finish Camera Unkind (Again) To Mustangs In NKAC Division II Title Fight
Mustangs Fail To Make Several 8 Point Leads Stand Up - Newport Wins 53-52
Mustang JVs Close Out The Season By Upsetting The Now 11-6 Wildcat JVs
Norton and Schack Combine For 20
As the Mustangs returned home out I-471 on Thursday night they must have been wondering what it takes to win a close game.
After eeking out a homestanding victory over Highlands 55-53, on December 20th the photo-finish camera has not smiled kindly on our
Mustangs.  A narrow 40-37 loss to Campbell County on January 3rd in the MCIT began the string of close losses.  The Camel loss was followed by
a 48-44 loss to eventual district champion, Scott, on January 16th after the Mustangs had led by ten on two occasions in the second half and 40-33
after three quarters.  Our next near-miss on January 23rd was a very costly one - a 47-45 loss to Deming probably deprived the Mustangs of their
seventh consecutive trip to the All "A" State Tournament in Richmond.  The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds succeeded on an inbounds
play with 1.9 seconds left to hand our Mustangs a 44-42 loss, tacking on another narrow loss to the near-miss  parade.  Three days later the
Augusta Panthers celebrated a 64-61 photo-finish upset win as the beat went on.  Tonight with the NKAC Division II Championship title on the
line, the Mustangs failed to maintain several second-half 8 point leads, and the Newport Wildcats rallied to defeat our Stangs by a nose, 53-52,
throwing the NKAC Division II race into a three-way tie between ourselves, Highlands, NCC and possibly Holy Cross if they defeat St. Henry on
Friday night.  Newport failed to play a full NKAC schedule.  The Mustangs close out the regular season with a 17-8 record and the memory of a
string of narrow losses.
On Thursday night in the Stan Arnzen Sports Center the varsity game somewhat resembled that played
by our JVs just twenty minutes prior.  Brossart and Newport traded baskets through a slow-down first
period with the Mustangs on top 7-6 before the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to lead 10-7 at the end of the
first quarter.  Brossart re-took the lead at 11-10 and maintained that lead for the remainder of the half
which ended with the Stangs on top 22-20.  Brossart threatened to blow the game open on three
different occasions in the third quarter leading  30-22, 32-24, and 36-28 before the Wildcats
cut the Mustangs lead to 42-37 after three complete periods of play.  Momentum courted the Newport
Wildcats throughout the final stanza as the Cats poked a nose in front at 45-44 with 4:56 to go, and with
the exception of retaking the lead at 46-45 could never re-establish the momentum necessary to finish
out the game and put the Newport ball on the wall.  The game was lost when Cody Collins hit a pair of
free-throws with 4 seconds to play, making it a two possession game at 53-49.  A Mitch Patterson
3 point goal at the buzzer closed the gap to 53-52 as the regular season came to a close.
Credit the Newport defense to shutting out Joey Webb and limiting Jacob Rieger to only
four field-goals on the night.  Drew Kremer picked up the slack, exploding for ten points in the third
quarter, being pretty much singly responsible for those Brossart bulges in that period.  Kremer
finished the night with an 18 point performance.  Mitch Patterson hit a pair of threes enroute to a ten
point night and Jacob Rieger slugged out a 12 point night as the Mustangs close the book on the regular  season at 17-8 and 4-2 in the
conference.  Newport put three double-figure scorers in the book as Casey McDaniel led the Cats with 15, Cody Collins added 14, and David
Darnel put up 12 as the Cats improve to 16-10 on the season.

JVs Close Out Season On Positive Note - Upset Newport 37-35
First year Mustangs JV Coach Curt Bezold closed out his inaugural season on a very positive note, bringing his Mustangs to Newport and
upsetting the home-standing Wildcats who entered the game with an impressive 11-5 record, but closed the book on their season at 11-6.
Brossart trailed 9-8 after one quarter and 15-14 at the half, but reversed their fortunes in the second half, outscoring the Cats 23-20, good
enough to put the Newport ball on the wall with a 37-35 victory.  Sophomores Travis Norton and John Schack both led the Mustangs with 10
points each as Travis Norton hit five field-goals including the game-winner, whereas John Schack hit two field-goals and connected on 6 of his 8
free-throw attempts.  Junior Kezley Jones led all scorers, netting 17 points for the Cats before fouling out of the game.  Brossart closes the
book on the seson with a 9-11 record and Newport finishes at 11-6.
