| Matt Giesler Inbounds Basket With 1.9 Dooms Mustangs
NCC Survives 44-42 Mustang JVs Upset Breds 41-26 |
| Matt Giesler scored on an inbounds play from under the NCC basket with 1.9 seconds left to play in the game, taking out our home-standing Brossart Mustangs 44-42, before an overflow crowd on Saturday night.
Newport Central Catholic used their superior height to establish an early lead as Matt Giesler set the tone by scoring 8 points in the first period, primarily through a high-low attack, and a pair of 3's by point guard Grant Pangallo, plus a bucket by Jeramie Connor made it 16-10 NCC after the first period of play. Jacob Rieger used his superior quickness to manuever around the Thoroughbred big men, as he scored the Mustangs' first eight points, and along with a pair of free-throws by Travis Norton, accounted for the Mustangs 10 first quarter tallies. Both teams put 12 points on the board in the second quarter as the Mustangs heated up from beyond the arc, with Joey Webb and Justin Morscher both knocking down long-balls and Jacob Rieger continuing his interior assult as the Mustangs trailed 28-22 at intermission. Jeramie Connor matched the output of the Mustang sharpshooters with a pair of 3's, as the Breds went on a 5-0 run in the final minute of the first half to re-establish their six point lead, after the Mustangs had closed the gap to 23-22 with 1:39 left in the second quarter. The third quarter saw the Mustangs chip into the NCC lead 38-34 after having cut the lead to 36-34 with 2:15 to play in the period, but NCC answered at the 1:33 mark to set up the final dramatic stanza. Justin Morscher's second long-range bomb of the night, cut the NCC lead to one point, 38-37, at the 6:29 mark, which was quickly answered by a Matt Giesler bucket, putting the Breds back on top by three, which expanded to five, 42-37, on an ensuing Giesler hoop at the 3:44 mark. At that point the Breds were done finished scoring for the night until the final seconds of the game. Brossart closed the gap and tied the game at 42-42 on a pair of Jacob Rieger free-throws and a 3 by Joey Webb with 1:48 to go in the contest. With just over 40 seconds to play in the game and the score knotted at 42-42, NCC held the ball for the last shot. That shot would come deep in the paint with just over 2 seconds to play and Drew Kremer blocking the field-goal attempt under the Breds' basket. The Breds were awarded the basketball out of bounds with 1.9 showing on the stadium clock setting up the dramatic finish. NCC head coach Grant Brannen called a time out to draw up the final play, and Brosssart countered with a time-out when the Breds set up in a box formation. Out of the Brossart time-out the Breds flattened out the inbounds formation and after faking a strong-side lob, inbounder Jake Ollberding found Matt Giesler with a weak-side pass that Giesler converted to win the game and start the Thoroughbreds' party. NCC scored only six points in the final period, all by Matt Giesler, including the game-winner, but that would be enough to hand the Mustangs their fifth loss of the season and first loss in the NKAC Division II Conference race. Both Matt Giesler and Jacob Rieger matched 18 point scoring performances. NCC put five scorers in the book, while six Mustangs netted our 42 points. NCC improves to 13-8 on the season and 3-2 in the conference, while Brossart falls to 16-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Mustangs have two conference games remaining. next Friday night at St. Henry and on February 19th at Newport. The Mustangs next game will be a return engagement at Augusta this coming Tuesday night, the site of the 10th Region All "A" play-in game. | JVs Rise To The Occasion - Upset NCC 41-26 |
| The Brossart Mustang JVs who have sometimes been offensively challenged this season, picked a great time to have a bust-out night, exploding for 41 points on the night, while holding their NCC counterparts to 26 points in posting the signature win.
Early on it was Newport Central Catholic who flexed some offensive muscle, outscoring the home team 10-6, and then doubling it up on our guys 12-6 with 5:30 to play in the first half. It was at that time that momentum would creep into a white Brossart unifom, and would remain there through the rest of the ballgame. Brossart would go on to outscore the Breds 15-4 in the second quarter to establish a 21-14 lead at intermission. NCC JV Coach Jimmy Pangallo set a new record for least time spent in a locker room at halftime, sending his charges back on the floor with 7:20 left until the start-up of the third quarter. Brossart gave back one point as NCC outscored the Stangs 10-9 in the third quarter, but that was as close as the Thoroughbreds would come on this night. The Mustang defense held the Breds to a single field-goal in the fourth quarter, while tacking on 11 points to their lead to seal the JV victory 41-26. Sophomore Travis Norton led all scorers with 11 points, putting ink in scorebook in all four quarters, and Freshman Zach Fardo nailed a pair of 3s and a point-after to put up 7 for the game. Brian Doyle took scoring honors for NCC with 8 points on the night. Box Score: BB: Popovich 0-1-2/2-5, Kramer 3-0-0/0-6, Norton 4-1-0/0-11, Dierig 2-0-0/0-4, Fardo 0-2-1/1-7, Schack 0-0-4/4-4, Brugger 2-0-0/0-4 Totals BB: 11-4-7/7-41 7-8 2-2 NC: Highchew 2-0-0/2-4, Wagner 1-0-0/0-2, Schmidt 3-0-0/0-6, Doyle 1-2-0/0-8, Moore 1-0-4/6-6 Totals NC: 8-2-4/9-26 8-5 |
