|Mustangs Make Defending State Champion Mason County Earn a 61-49 Win
Over Our Mustangs On Senior Night
Our four Mustang Seniors played their final high school game in the Thomas H. Seither on Tuesday night against
a premiere opponent, in the persons of the 2008 defending Kentucky State Champion Mason County Royals.
The Mustangs found the Royals tall, long, and talented as the Mustangs had to work for everything that we got
against the Royals defense which had a large wingspan.
Joey Webb had the golden shooting touch early in the game, connecting on two 3-point goals and a
deadman-duece, keeping the Mustangs right in the game, trailing by only one point 14-13 at the :38.4 mark in the
first quarter, before the Royals went on a 5-0 run to end the period on top 19-14. Russ Middleton was responsible
for 11 of those 19 Mason County points.
Jacob Rieger took center stage for the Mustangs, scoring all 10 of our points in the second period, as the
Mustangs went to the locker room at halftime trailing 33-23. Both teams put up 10 points each in the third frame,
maintaining their 10 point advantage 43-33 as Joe Webb knocked down his third three point goal of the night
while Rieger extended his scoring skein to 16 points with four free-throws.
The Brossart Mustangs threatened to challenge the Royals lead, going on a 6-0 run to open the fourth period, and
a Jacob Rieger three-point was in the air that could have made it a one-point game, but the junior forward's
offering failed to hit the mark, and Mason County maintained that four point lead through the 4:40 mark when
the Royals began to draw off, when the Mustangs were forced to resort to presssing and fouling in an effort to
close the gap. Mason County had little trouble shredding the press and they hit their free-throws as well to secure
the 61-49 victory. The Mustangs fall to 17-7 with one regular season game left to play, at Newport on Thursday
night. The Royals improved to 17-6 with two games left in the regular season.

As a sidenote I thought that our Junior forward Jacob Rieger acquitted himself quite hansomely and
matched up well with these Royals scoring 21 points in mostly one-on-one situatons. Rieger certainly raised a few
eyebrows among the Royals fans in attendance as well as the college coaches in the house.
Our JVs burst from the gate and built a 15 point lead, after shutting out their Mason County counterparts in the
first quarter to lead 13-0 and then scored the first basket in the second period. At that point a funny thing
happened, as the Mustangs would score just one more point in the period, and the Royals responded with 20
points, retaliating to make it a 20-16 Mason County lead at intermission. Momentum remained with the Royals
in the second half as our JVs were blitzed 21-15 to hand the home team their 11th loss against 8 wins with one
game remaining in the 2009 Junior varsity basketball season.
The Mustangs were led by Dylan Dierig with 8 points. Allen Kramer and John Schack each added 7 points on the
night. Freshmen Tyler Black (11) and Bradley Lang (10) combined for 21 for the Royals.
