| Some Nights We Are The Happy Guys -
But On Friday Night It Was The Scott Eagles' Turn. Eagles Come From Seven Down In Fourth Quarter To Claim 37th District Championship 48-44 |
| In the 37th District Championship game, played out at the Campbell County Middle School on Friday night, eerily similar to that played between these two teams back on Janaury 23rd in Taylor Mill, the Scott Eagles had to overcome a late-game Brossart lead, and captured the 37th Championship Title 48-44, the exact same score as that recorded in their previous, regular season contest.
In Friday night's championship bout, Brossart fell behind early 11-6 with 2:30 to play in the first quarter, but then rallied to take the lead 14-13 by the end of the period, as Jacob Rieger connected on five first-quarter field-goals and Jordan Armstrong netted an off-balance jumper at the horn. The Brossart Mustangs seemingly outplayed their Scott counterparts in the second stanza, scoring five field-goals and adding fourteen more points on our side of the ledger. Two of those field-goals were long-range bombs by Joey Webb. Scott matched the Mustangs' fourteen point effort, scoring four field-goals, but utilized the free-throw line, connecting on five of nine in the quarter, and seven of eleven for the half, while the Mustangs made only two apperarances at the charity stripe in the first half, sinking both. The Mustangs led 28-27 at intermission. The second half opened much as the first quarter, with neither team able to make any significant progress, the Mustangs managed only a Jake Rieger basket in the first five minutes of the quarter as the Scott Eagles took a 32-30 lead, before Rieger scored the last three buckets of the quarter to establish a 36-32 lead with eight minutes remaining in the game. When Jordan Armstrong drained a baseline jumper and was fouled in the act of shooting and completed the three-point play, the Mustangs had run out to a 39-32, seven point lead, our longest lead of the night. From that point on momentum crawled into a Scott Eagle uniform and the Mustangs wouldn't score again until the 2:15 mark, a five minute and fourteen second drought at a most inopportune time, that saw the Mustangs yield the lead to the Eagles 41-39, following a 9-0 run. Jacob Rieger again came up huge, hitting a three-pointer to give the Stangs the lead back at 42-41, but Kellen Smith answered with a three-pointer of his own to retake the lead for good at 44-42 with 2:04 to play in the game. Four consecutive free-throws later and the Mustangs had received a dose of the medicine that they administered to Campbell County on Wednesday night. Jacob Rieger scored his twenty-fifth point of the night with 7.9 to play in the game, but it was too little, too late, as the Eagles earned the right to cut down the nets in the Campbell County Middle School in celebrating their 37th District Championship. Rieger led the Mustangs with 25 points. Jordan Armstrong put up 9 and Joey Webb 8. Daniel O'Conner was the difference in the game scoring 15 points for the Eagles, and his performance was matched by Kellen Smith who also netted 15. Jordan Armstrong and Jacob Rieger were named to the All-Tournament Team from Brossart and E.J. Murray, Daniel O'Conner, and Kellen Smith from Scott. Smith was named the tournament MVP.
