| Mustang Freshmen Clear First Hurdle By Defeating Scott 58-33
In Thursday Opening Round Semi-Finals Will Face Campbell County In Championship Game On Tuesday Evening at 5:30pm |
| The Brossart Mustang Freshmen advanced to the championship game of the 37th District Freshmen Tournament on the merits of a 58-33 victory over third-seeded Scott Eagles on Thursday night in the SyDome.
The Eagles came to Alexandria with a game plan, and that was to take it to the Mustangs defense and force the issue. For the best part of the first half, they were quite successful, as the Stangs were whistled for 10 fouls in the first six minutes, giving the Eagles double-bonus advantage for the entire second period. The Mustangs led 6-5 with 3:49 to play in the first quarter, and then went on a 7-0 run to gain a 13-5 lead with :38 to play in the period. The lead would be short-lived as the Eagles went on a 5-0 run of their own, and trailed by only three, 13-10 at the end of the quarter. Matt Kramer was responsible for 6 of the Mustangs 13 first period points. |

| During the first half of the second quarter the Mustangs and Eagles matched baskets, as the Mustangs led 19-17 with 2:08 to go in the half. Austin Hinkel picked up up where Kramer left off in the first quarter, by scoring three second quarter field-goals propelling the Stangs to a 16 point quarter as the guys in green ran out to a 29-19 lead at intermission.
The Mustangs blew the game open in the third quarter as the Mustangs piled 15 points onto the board, while holding the Eagles to only 6 points, as the lead inflated to 44-25. Brossart finished out the game by adding another 14 point quarter and allowing the Eagles 8, to account for the final score of 58-33. There were many great individual performances on the night. Matt Kramer is really catching on to being an effective post-player, leading all scorers with a 13 point performance, even after having one taken away on a bogus travelling call. Austin Hinkel played with poise on both ends of the floor, netting 6 points for the contest, while pulling down a myriad of rebounds, and blocking several Eagle field-goal attempts. Trevor Bezold executed a circus-act steal, pass to himself, and layup that was worthy of YouTube. Bezold finished his night's work with 10 points on the board, and a passel of assists. Zach Fardo was his usual consistent self, putting 9 hard-earned points on the board while directing the Mustangs offense. Joe Jennings finished on three field goal attemps for six points late in the game. Corey Kramer and Jared Hahn didn't score a point - but they didn't have to, as both executed their ball-handling and defense, and assist duties quite well. Logan Kramer delivered the Mustangs' only 3 point goal, and added two field-goals back in the first quarter when the game was still very much being contested. For their extraordinary efforts, Matt Kramer and Trevor Bezold were named the Alexandria Wal-Mart Subway - Players of the Game. |
