| The Brossart Mustangs and Campbell County Camels freshmen hooked up in a classic 37th District Championship heavyweight battle on Tuesday night in the SyDome. After four quarters and two overtimes the Brossart Mustangs emerged victorious 47-42.
This was certainly one of the more exciting games ever contested in the friendly confines of the SyDome. Campbell County overcame a quick 5-0 Brossart lead, as Nathan McGovney scored 8 unanswered points, enroute to a 10-8 first quarter lead. Neither team showed any penchant to exploit the other in the second period as only a single Campbell County basket by Jeff Skinner went on the board in the first three minutes of the stanza. The lid came off in the latter part of the quarter as the Camels won the period 8-5, giving them an 18-13 lead at intermission. A basket by Josh Claybern gave the Camels what would become their biggest lead of the night 20-13, before the Mustang rallied on a six point period by Zach Fardo to bring the Mustangs back to within two at 23-21. The two defensive minded teams slugged it out through the fouth quarter with the Mustangs limiting the Camels to six points and Brossart managing eight points to knot the score at 29-29 at the end of regulation. Zach Fardo had an off-balance long-ball in the air at the buzzer, which rimmed out sending the game to OT. Four lead changes and six points each from both teams sent the game to 2OT. McGovney and Claybern provided 3 points each for the Camels, while Zach Fardo hit a huge 3 and hit 3 free-throws to account for the total Mustangs' overtime 6 points. A Spencer Brown backdoor basket gave the Mustangs the advantage at 37-35 to start the second OT. Claybern answered to re-tie the game at the 1:40 mark. Spencer Brown provided an encore basket to give the Stangs a 39-37 advantage, and then executed his third consecutive basket to give the Stangs a 41-37 lead under a minute. Not to be denied Jared White delivered a 3-point goal to cut the Mustang lead to one at 41-40. From that point on Brossart would connect on six free-throws and Campbell County's Nate McGovney would score their last field-goal of the season, as the Mustangs prevailed 47-42 to capture Coach Mike Schack's first-ever district championship in five tries, and earn a berth in the 10th Region Tournament. The Mustangs were led by Zach Fardo with 16, and Trevor Bezold with 15. Campbell County's 8th Grader Nathan McGovney led all scorers with 21 points. Box Score: BB: Bezold 4-0-7/9-15, Fardo 4-1-5/6-16, Trentman 0-0-1/2-1, Brown 3-0-0/0-6, Hinkel 2-0-1/3-5, MKramer 2-0-0/0-4 Totals BB: 15-1-14/23-47 14-8 CC: Wright 1-0-0/0-2, Skinner 3-0-1/4-7, McGovney 9-0-3/6-21, Claybern 3-0-1/2-7, White 0-1-0/0-3, Lemons 1-0-0/0-2 Totals CC: 17-1-5/12-42 12-3 |
