The 2009 Brossart Mustangs Freshmen duplicated the feat of the 2004 Freshmen Mustangs, capturing our school's
second-ever 10th Region Freshmen Championship.
The Mustangs won or tied every quarter in being the only team in the 10th Region to win on the final night of
their season.  The Mustangs and Cardinals tied at 12-12 after the first period before the Mustangs drew off to a
26-19 advantage at halftime.
Clark County stormed back, scoring the first two buckets of the second half to quickly make it a 26-24 game as
the Mustangs yielded to the Cardinal pressure.  A 9-4 Brossart run to finish out the third quarter allowed the
Mustangs to maintain their halftime edge with only six minutes left to play.
The Mustangs put on a demonstration superb ball control and high percentage shooting in the fourth period,
forcing the Cardinals to sent the Stangss to the free-throw line where the Mustangs connected on 13 of 19 down
the stretch to close the book on the Clark County Cardinals and the 2009 Freshmen basketball season.
The Mustangs were led in the scoring column by Zach Fardo with 12 points and Trevor Bezold with 11, as the two
shot 14 for 16 from the charity stripe.  Austin Trentmen (9) and Austin Hinkel (8) combined for 17 points, and
both made major contributions on the defensive end, controlling the boards.  Matt Kramer got us out of the gate
by scoring on big Adam Fatkin on our first scoring possession and finished the night with 4 points.  Corey Kramer
added 3 while forcing numerous Cardinals turnovers.  Weston Smith scored the last two points of the 2009
Freshmen season with a pair of free-throws.
The last and only team to win a 10th Region Freshmen Championship were the infamous 07's who went on to
become legends by going 23-0 as JVs, winning the Ashland Invitational Tournament in 2006, became undefeated
NKAC Division II Conference Champs and "A" State Champions while amassing a 28-5 record in 2007, finishing
as the Number One team in the Northern Kentucky coaches poll.
This freshmen team closes out the season with a 16-9 record and came on strong in the post-season defeating
Scott, Campbell County, Harrison County and  Clark County.  They were introduced to the Senior night crowd at
halftime of the Brossart - Mason County varsity game.
