Mustangs Don't Back Down Give 8 Time "A" State Champs UHA A Run For Their Money February 1, 2008
Great showing by our guys in the 2008 All "A" State Tournament this week in Richmond! They not only took out Lexington Christian on Thursday night, but gave mighty University Heights and their two Divison I prospects a run for their money. Sophomore Jacob Rieger learned a valuable lesson - don't mess with success. Prior to the St. Patrick, Calvary Christian, and Lexington Christian wins, Ham and Turkey Sub Sandwiches were the pre-game fare. On Friday, we switched it up to pizza and look what happened - we lost to UHA.
If the players honestly believe that it was the pizza and not the 18 turnovers that resulted in 21 points, and two guys named Tyshawn Edmondson and Scotty Hopson that was responsible for their demise - so be it. Rieger didn't seemed convinced. I think that in two years when Rieger and his classmates are seniors, I better get in the mood for an extended run of sub sandwiches. Or maybe we play well when staying at Super 8's. The last time was in 2000, when we upset Graves County at Rupp! Brossart battled the Blazers early on by resorting to a little "Willieball" by dictating a slow tempo, and it worked. We led 2-0, 5-2, and 5-4, and trailed by only four after a quarter at 14-10. The margain was still four with 2:53 to go in the second quarter at 23-19, when the Blazers went on a 7-3 run to take a 27-19 lead to the locker room at halftime. We cut the UHA lead to six 34-28 early on in the fourth quarter, 34-28 and the ball in the air that would have made it four, gotten the crowd into it, and forced a UHA timeout. But the shot was off the mark, UHA rebounded and scored, going on to a 46-32 win over our valiant Mustangs. Hopson was held to 19 and Edmondson 12. The fact that instead of joy and jubilation over a seemingly moral victory, there were tears and heartbreak in our locker room following the UHA loss, speaks volumes about the spirit and will-to-win possessed by these '08 Mustangs. If the Mustangs can emerge from this tournament the beneficiary of the experience and the resolve to move forward, things could get mighty interesting in the upcoming 37th District tournament and for the remainder of the regular season. We feel that we have represented the 10th Region well this week in Richmond and like McArthur - vow to return! Box Score: Patterson 0-1-0/0-3, Armstrong 0-1-0/0-3, Webb 1-2-0/0-8, Kremer 2-0-4/4-8, Rieger 1-0-1/6-3, Hertzenberg 0-1-0/0-3 Stortz 2-0-0/0-4, Hanneken 0-1-0/0-3 Totals BB: 6-6-5/10-35 Totals UHA: 16, 2-8/13-46
