A large, enthusiastic partisan Mustangs crowd was on hand to root for their team last night at the Campbell County Middle School where the 07-08 Mustangs attempted to extend their season in a semi-finals bout with the Scott Eagles. They got their money's worth, but the movie had a sad ending. The 07-08 Mustangs, intent on adding a regional tournament appearance to their resume, came out shooting as Greg Stortz, on a mission, knocked in three baskets,
and Joey Webb put up five points including a "3" ball, giving the Stangs an 11-8 lead after the first period of play. The Mustangs maintained a one-point lead at halftime as Mitch Patterson and Justin Morscher nailed long-range bombs. The Eagles attempted to take over the game early on in the second half as they ran out to a 27-23 midway through the third period before the Stangs could right the ship and draw back to within one point at 29-28 with eight minutes left in somebody's season
We dominated the first half of the final stanza by unleashing an effective press, resulting in a 37-29 lead with 4:52 to go, and 39-33 when Jacob Rieger fouled out of the game, allowing the Eagles an advantage in the rebounding category, utilizing this edge to get several rebounds on missed free-throws as the Eagles chipped away at the Mustangs lead. With 1:07 to play in the game, the Eagles drew even at 43-43, but when Drew Kremer hit the front end of a bonus with 6.7 seconds showing on the clock giving the Stangs a 44-43 lead, it appeared that the Mustangs might survive and advance to the 37th District Championship Game and earn a berth in the upcoming 10th Region Tournament. Nick Hiller grabbed Drew's errant second charity toss and scrambled up the floor with time expiring, when he momentarily lost the handle, prior to advancing the ball to E.J. Murray in the coffin corner, who put up a 3-point attempt with Greg Stortz in his mug just ahead of the horn, and hit nothing but net.
Sudden victory is certainly sweet, and we have been in that position more often that not in recent years, but tonight the 07-08 Mustangs took the bullet right through the heart, and the curtain dropped suddenly on our season, as well as the playing careers of Greg Stortz, Ben Ridder, and Zach Hertzenberg. The Scott Eagles will advance to Saturday night's 37th District Championship game at 7pm and be one of our district's representatives in next week's 10th Regional
| Tournament. Our Mustangs finish this transition season at 15-13. They improved with each ensuing practice and game and now carry the label of 'veteran ballclub." Congratulations to Coach Mike Code, his staff, and this team on a season of overachievment! Box Score: Patterson 0-1-2/2-5, Armstrong 0-0-2/2-2, Webb 3-1-0/1-9, Morscher 0-1-1/2-4, Kremer 3-0-1/3-7, Rieger 3-0-1/2-7, Stortz 5-0-0/0-10 Totals: 14-2-7/12-44 15-13 The Eagles were led by Nick Hiller with 13 points.
