Mustangs Mount Furious Eleventh Hour Rally Close From 19 Down to Just Miss 62-58 At Newport Jacob Rieger shows his stuff in blue-chip time - Nets 12 in "Furious Fourth Quarter" and leads all scorers with 19 on the night JVs Win 10th Game of the Season 34--27 Justin Morscher Shows The Way With 11 Points |
The Brossart Mustangs battled the Newport Wildcats to a four-point decision on Monday night, coming up on the short end of the stick 62-58. The route that we took to arrive at that final score is an interesting topic. After battling the Cats to an 12-11 first quarter one-point deficit, Newport went on a 12-2 run to start the second frame and the Stangs were in trouble, down 24-13 with just over 3 minutes to play in the half. Our guys retaliated by outscoring the home team 9-4 to end the half, digging out to trail by a more manageable six points at 28-22. Newport attempted to blow it open again by going on another run out of the locker room, this time 19-6, making it a 47-28 Wildcat advantage with just under a minute to go in the third quarter. A 4-0 finish by the Mustangs made it 47-32 with eight minutes to play. That 4-0 run to end the third quarter triggered a 30-15 Mustang rally making for a very exciting finish. While the Stangs could only manage a single field-goal in the third stanza, we scored ten baskets in the final period. With three minutes to go in the ballgame the Wildcats' advantage was 12 at 53-41 but you began to feel the Mustangs creeping up on the Cats as momentum began to slip into a green uniform. The Cats were becoming increasingly impatient, and a series of turnovers later the Mustangs had cut into the Newport lead at 56-48 and 1:09 left to re-enact the Lexington Christian game finish. Unfortunately, this story doesn't have a happy ending, as Newport hung on, saved by the bell, 62-58. They say that great players show their stuff in Blue-Chip time. Last night sophomore Jacob Rieger demonstrated that axiom in spades. He played his best basketball in the second half, scoring 17 points, with 12 of those, including a pair of threes, coming in the fourth quarter with the game on the line. The Mustangs scored 26 points in the.final period. Rieger led all scorers with 19 on the night, while Greg Stortz turned in a solid performance with 13, Mitch Patterson put up 9, and Joey Webb and Drew Kremer were responsible for 8 each. Jamon Greene led the Wildcats with 15 points. The woulda, coulda, shoulda factor that the guys will have to live with following this narrow defeat is the fact that we missed a myriad of point-blank layups throughout the contest that might well have proven to be the margain of victory.. Box Score: BB: Patterson 3-1-0/1-9, Armstrong 0-0-1/2-1, Webb 1-2-0/0-8, Kremer 1-0-6/8-8, Rieger 3-2-7/8-19, Stortz 5-0-1/2-13 Totals: BB: 14-5-15/21-58 15-12 Totals: N: 23-2-10/19-62 12-12 |
