| The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds extracted their proverbial pound of Mustang flesh on the Carothers Road Hill on Saturday night. The Mustangs had enjoyed being on the opposite end of the result in six of the past seven meetings between the two Campbell County Catholics. On this night the two teams battled to a 5-5 tie early on before NCC went on an 8-0 run, giving the home team a 13-5 lead, which became 13-7, after a period of play. An early second quarter field goal made it a 15-7 NCC, before Brossart went on a 10-5 run to trail by only three points 20-17 at halftime. |
| The Thoroughbreds asserted themselves out of the locker room at halftime by going on a 17-4 run throughout the third quarter to draw off to a 37-21 lead and eradicate any thoughts that the visitors had of springing an upset on this Saturday night. Brossart would outscore the Breds 10-8 in the final period, but the damage had been long done and the Brossart ball went on the NCC wall. Senior Dustin Giesler was too much body in the paint for the Mustangs in this one, leading all scorers with 20 points on the night and 8 of those in the decisive third period. Michael Libscomb contributed 10 points as the two seniors combined for 30 of the Breds 45 total points. The Mustangs were led in the scoring column by sophomore Jacob Rieger with 14 points - 13 of those coming in the first half. Brossart falls to 13-11 on the season and the Breds improve to 14-8. Brossart will host the Augusta Panthers on Tuesday night in the SyDome. | In a ballgame that made the spectators yearn for soccer season, the Brossart Mustangs and Newport Central Thoroughbreds, who basically mirrored each other, turned in defensive gems to the point of limiting themselves to offensive futility. The Mustangs outscored the Breds 7-4 in the first period as Allen Kramer was responsible for five of those seven points. The offensive output in the second period slowed down considerably as Brossart edged NCC 4-3 in the period resulting in a 11-7 Mustangs lead at halftime. Sophomores Tyler Lampe and Cole Little came from off the bench for NCC to inflict near-fatal damage to the Mustangs defense when Lampe drilled consecutive three pointers, and Little tacked on a garden variety field goal spurring an 8-0 Thoroughbred run to start the third period, in which the Mustangs were limited to only a Justin Morscher basket giving the Breds a 15-13 lead heading into the final stanza. Newcath would connect on 6 of 9 free-throw attempts down the stretch to win the titanic struggle 21-16. Brossart was plagued by poor free-throw shooting, connecting on only 2 of 9 charity-toss opportunities. The NCC JVs improve to 15-2 with the victory.
