| Mustangs Turn In Game Effort Beat Harrison County 57-55 Joey Webb and Drew Kremer Combine For 32 Points Webb Knocks Down Five Longballs February 5, 2008 |
| Our Brossart Mustangs dodged the dreaded Post-"A"State jinx bullet and outlasted the Harrison County Thorobreds 57-55 in a cliffhanger Tuesday night on the hilltop in Cynthiana. It was a game of momentum swings in which the Mustangs built several substantial leads, only to have the Breds rally back to negate our advantage, causing our guys to have to regroup and re-build. Brossart had the first momentum advantage opening up a 13-4 first quarter lead, only to be outscored 8-0 following a Joey Webb 3-ball to open the second quarter making it a 16-12 game. The Mustangs would re-establish their first half dominance in the final minutes of the half, pushing out to a 31-19 lead. |
| During that sixteen minute period of time, Joe Webb made his presence known by knocking down four longballs. Harrison County responded with a 13-2 run out of the locker room, cutting the Mustangs lead to one at 33-32 signaling that we were in for a dogfight. Again our guys were up to the task, returning the favor 6-2 to re-establish a 39-34 lead at the end of three complete. The Breds wasted no time in threatening once again early in the fourth quarter, cutting the Mustangs lead to one at 43-42 and again the Stangs would |
| one at 43-42 and again the Stangs would dash off to increase their lead to 41-36. Harrison County answered - 41-40 with 6:19 to play, and later 43-42 at the 4:47 mark. It was then that our guys appeared to be enroute to putting the Breds away for good, going on a 9-0 run, establishing a 52-42 lead with just under two minutes to play when the Breds unleased a 3-point arial assault that would bring them back to within one point at 54-53 with only 27.1 seconds to play. We could do no better than one of two from the free-throw line until Greg Stortz broke open a 55-55 tie with 3.7 seconds left in the game, by nailing two critical free-throws. Following a Harrison County time-out, Brett Franklin dashed the length of the court and scored the would-be tying basket, just a fraction of a second after the horn sounded ending the game - the Mustangs escaped 57-55 for their 13th victory of the season. Our Mustangs were stymied tonight by poor free-throw shooting, a facet of the game that has been one of the strengths of our club this year. Tonight as a unit, we could muster only 10 of 23 from the charity stripe, allowing Harrison County to stay in the game. Senior Julius Talbott, who has recently joined the Harrison County lineup, is the real deal. It is easy to see why the Breds' fortunes have reversed to the good in recent weeks. He led the Breds with 26 points and made Brett Franklin a major threat as his primary receiver on drive and dish plays. Franklin had 17 on the night, with 10 of those coming in the first half. The only other Harrison County scorers were Eric Case with 7 and John Michael Reitz, the son of head coach Mike Reitz, who contributed 5 points. On the Mustangs side of the ledger, Juniors Joey Webb and Drooo Kremer led the Stangs with 16 apiece.. Jacob Rieger tacked on 9, Greg Stortz 8, and Zach Hertzenberg a pair of threes for a total of 6 points. In a post-game interview Coach Mike Code complimented his team on overcoming a poor free-throw shooting night and being mature enough to fend off the Breds again and again and then win the game. Brossart will take a day off of practice on Wednesday and then begin to prepare for the Carothers Road Hill Thoroughbreds on Saturday night. | The JVs hadn't played since defeating Bellevue back on January 19th but appeared to be in mid-season form in upending the homestanding Thorobreds 44-33 and avenging a 37-35 loss to the Breds back in the MCIT. Harrison County led 10-7 after a period and 19-18 at the half. Justin Morscher spearheaded a 16 point Mustangs third period by scoring seven of his game high 14 points during that quarter, putting the Mustangs out front 34-29. A great defensive effort that limited the Breds to only four fourth quarter points gave the JVs the 44-33 win. Allen Kramer took six stitches just over his right eye after being the accidental recipient of an errant elbow at practice on Monday night, and returned to the hoops wars twenty-four hours later and contributed six points to the Mustangs' victory. Box Score: Popovich 1-0-5/10-7, Morscher 2-2-4/6-14, Kramer 1-0-4/6-6, Hanneken 1-0-0/0-2, Crowley 1-1-0/0-5, Wolfer 2-0-4/8-8, Brugger 1-0-0/0-2 Totals Mustangs: 9-2-17/30-44 Totals Breds: 6-3-12/17-33 |
