10th Region All "A" Tournament Mustangs Win Sixth Consecutive 10th Region "A" Title - Upset St. Patrick In Semis - Beat Calvary Christian In Championship Game January 23-26th - Deming High School
Mustangs Roll Through Opening Round Of 10th Region "A" Tournament With 76-40 Win Over Paris
The Brossart Mustangs cleared their first hurdle towards winning their sixth consecutive 10th Region All "A" Championship by defeating Paris 76-40 in a game that the Mustangs led start to finish. Joey Webb set the tone by nailing his first two 3-point goal attempts and allowing the Mustangs a 6-0 lead which quickly became 10-0 before the fans were comfortable in their seats. Webb would connect on four long-balls on the night and finish the contest with 12. The Stangs would hit a total of seven threes, as Mitch Patterson knocked down a pair and Justin Morscher tossed one in late in the game for good measure.
| Jacob Rieger led the Stangs in overall scoring with 14 points, and Greg Stortz checked in with 10 points on the night. A total of 12 Mustangs put ink in the scorebook. Congratulations to Nathan Brugger who scored his first varsity points ever, with a field-goal in the fourth period (See Story Below). Brossart led 19-7 after one, 41-17 at halftime, and 60-28 after three periods enroute to the 76-40 win. With the win we get back to .500 with a 9-9 record, while Paris drops to 2-12. | Mustangs Upset St. Patrick 66-62 In 10th Region "A" Semi-Finals Will Face Calvary Christian In Saturday Night Finals At 7pm |
Mustangs JV Coach Bob Rowe thought that the Gatorade for the trip home was sitting in an unlucky spot on the bus and had one of his JVs go out to the lot and move it to a more favorable position, just prior to the start of Friday night's 10th Region Semi-Finals at Deming High School. If moving the Gatorade was worth a couple of free-throws it was worth the effort. Just under a year ago on the floor of McBrayer Arena, as the celebration of winning an All "A" State Championship was going on around us, Greg Stortz emphatically infomed me that "next year, we'll be back." Whether the Mustangs return to Richmond is yet to be seen, but in the 10th Region Semi-Finals game last night vs St. Patrick, who had dealt our Mustangs two previous losses this season, Greg Stortz and his teammates put
themselves in position to fulfill his prophecy. They upset the favored Saints 66-62 to advance to Saturday night's championship game vs Calvary Christian with a chance to get their ticket punched for Richmond for the sixth consecutive time.
The Mustangs played their best game of the season and Stortz was a warrior. He wouldn't be denied. He, along with Jacob Rieger accounted for 37 of the Mustangs' 66 points and a myriad of rebounds. Zach Hertzenberg, our other "big" hit the biggest basket of his life and made his return to the Mustangs roster this year worth all of the catching up. Joey Webb (14) hit six blue-chip free-throws to preserve the Mustangs lead down the stretch and Mitch Patterson got us up and down the floor against the Saints pressure while scoring 11 points. It was a total team effort. Our guys executed the game plan that our coaches had worked on since December 26th when the Saints nosed our Mustangs 65-64. Coach Mike Code and his staff again devised a brilliant game plan, and our guys executed it to perfection.
The only downer of our victory is that St. Patrick had to lose. Our hearts go out to Coach Hinson, his seniors Chris Owens and Nick Anderson, and the Saints team. We know how badly they wanted it, and how disappointed they must be. Coach Code stated that our team grew up last night, showing the poise and maturity necessary to win big ballgames. He even confided that lately we might have held a few things back, that were employed
tlast night to put our guys in a position to win - they worked! Brossart jumped out to a 10-3 lead early on, and extended it to 14-6 just before the half. St. Patrick outscored us 4-2 in the final minutes of the period to make it 16-10 after 8 minutes. With 5:07 to go in the second period, St. Patrick took the lead at 19-18 but a pair of Jacob Rieger free-throws regained the lead, which the Mustangs extended to 10 just before the half at 34-24. Again St. Patrick outscored us 4-0 in the final seconds and the Stangs led 34-28
at halftime. Brossart again led by as many as 10 in the third period which ended 48-40 in favor of the Mustangs. Much as in their game with Deming, St. Patrick rallied early in the fourth quarter to cut the Mustangs lead to one at 51-50 and after Jacob Rieger fouled out, knotted the score at 54-54 at the 3:04 mark, and then again at 58-58 with 1:30 left.
That was as close as the Saints would come. Joey Webb's timely free-throw shooting and Hertzenberg's heriocs sent the Stangs to the Saturday night finals. Unfortunately, Frank's cell phone couldn't link to the internet. Hopefully, all of our fans were able to listen to Jason Butler call the game on WFTM.

Congratulations to the 2008 Brossart Mustangs!!! They came into the 10th Region "A" Tournament for the first time in years that the tournament wasn't the Brossart Invitational. This team had to upset the tournament favorite and take care of business against Paris and Calvary Christian in order to earn their ticket to Richmond. On Saturday night in the championship game, Joey Webb put a quick damper on the upset hopes of the Calvary Christian Cougars who were playing in their first ever 10th Region "A" Championship game, by nailing four 3-Point goals and putting up 14 points in the first period, spearheading a 23-5 first quarter rally, from which the Cougars never recovered.
Webb finished the night with a career high 21 points, with 5 trifectas. Drew Kremer played a huge game against Calvary Chirstian putting up 19 points, and Jacob Rieger continues to impress and improve tacking on 16 points. Webb recorded 47 points in the three day event, Rieger 48, and Greg Stortz 40, earning that trio spots on the All-Tournament team. Joe Flanagan led Calvary with 21 points. Our Mustangs will face Lexington Christian, the champions of Region 11 in the 1:30pm game on Thursday in McBrayer Arena at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. |
