Mustangs Humble Mighty University Heights 58-38 Hold Blue-Chipper Scotty Hobson To Six Win Our Twentieth Game Of The Season Earn Date With Destiny In Championship Game vs Bardstown 2007 Touchstone Energy All "A" State Tournament |
The University Heights Blazers were making their 14th appearance in the Touchstone Energy All "A" State Tournament this week. They had won this event on seven occasions. Their enrollment from the 9th Grade to the 12th Grade is 83 and their basketball roster braggs two Division One prospects. Brossart, whose roster is comprised of 8 seniors who grew up competing with and against each other since they were kids, humbled the University Heights (Basketball) Academy 58-38 in the Touchstone Energy All "A" State Semi-Finals on Saturday. UHA simply couldn't deal with our defense. After a horrid shooting experience for the first quarter and a half and trailing 12-8 after a period, Josh Kidney pried the lid off of the McBreyer Arena hoops by nailing a 3-point goal at the 2:50 mark in the second period which ignited a rally which saw the Mustangs take a 22-18 lead to the locker room at halftime. The second half was all Bishop Brossart, as the Mustangs outscored the Blazers 13-7 to take a 35-25 advantage into the final stanza. By then the UHA Blazers had given up and it became a foregone conclusion that the Mustangs would advance to the Championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs only had four players put ink in the scorebook, but each that scored made a major offensive contribution. Josh Kidney scored 9, "Battleship" Bryan Niemeyer 12, Jimmy Uebel (7-7 From The Free Throw Line) added 14, and the game's MVP Troy Cooper laid 23 on the Blazers. Kyle Kramer and Matt Lloyd were relentless on defense. With the victory the '07 Mustangs become 20 game winners, the first Mustangs team to win over 20 since the '03-04 Mustangs went 23-6. The win over UHA qualifies the '07 Mustangs to become legends, an opportunity to bring the first boys All "A" State Championship trophy back to Alexandria. The story of this team's run in this tournament is a testament to the resolve of the seven seniors who have banded together to overcome the loss of a key cog. To win this thing, overcoming the incredible odds stacked against them, will make for one of the most incredible sucess stories in the history of our program. Best of luck to Coach Mike Code and his hard-working staff who have given these guys the opportunity to cut the nets down in the "A" State big dance on Sunday BOX SCORE: Brossart: Kidney 3-1-0/0-9, Niemeyer 4-0-4/4-12, Uebel 2-1-7/7-14, Cooper 6-0-9/11-23 UHA: Watkins 0-0-0/2-0, Edmondson 6-0-1/4-13, Brown 1-1-1/2-6, Reeves 3-0-0/0-6, Hopson 3-0-0/0-6, Langhi 2-0-1/2-5, Fitzpatrick 1-0-0/0-2 Total Mustangs: 15-2-20/22-58 20-3 3-0 Total Blazers: 16-1- 3/10-38 |
