Mustangs Get "Back On Track" With 76-58 Win Over Silver Grove In Opening Round Of The 10th Region All "A" Classic Wednesday, Janaury 24, 2007
There is nothing that causes more consternation in the Brossart coaches office than an impending date with the Silver Grove Big Trains. Rarely do the Mustangs not have the best player on the floor, but when we battle the Trains we are acutely aware that Corey Pelle will fill that role and is capable of going off for mega-points.
Mustangs Regain Their Groove In 76-58 Win Over Corey Pelle Led Silver Grove Big Trains In Opening Round of 10th Region "A" Classic Pelle Puts On A 33 Point Shooting Exhibition Cooper Answers With 25 As Mustangs Advance To Semis On Friday Night To Face Calvary Christian
Last night's opening round 10th Region All "A" Tournament game was no exception. If the Mustangs' coaches would have known in advance that Pelle would have scored 33 points, they may have sent out for another round of Malox. Corey Pelle is everything that he is billed as - in the fourth period he lit the Stangs up for four 3-pointers from well beyond NBA range, and one was from the tail of our Mascot - Tougaloo. Troy Cooper did a yeoman's job of balancing out Pelle's 33 by putting up 25 of his own, mostly on isolated one-on-one goals. The difference was that Pelle was the only Train with double figures. Cooper had some help from his teammates.
Josh Kidney drained 9 of 10 free throw attmpts and added a 3 and three 2s enroute to a 18 point night. Jimmy Uebel started both halves with a three point goal and ended up with 15 points on the game. Bryan Niemeyer had several blocked shots and a bunch of rebounds. Brossart opened the game by outscoring the Trains 22-13 in the first half, but found themselves up only 37-31 at the half, despite doubling up on the Trains 26-13 at the 7:02 mark in the second quarter. The Mustangs turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, outscoring the Trains 17-8 and extended their lead to 54-39 and continued to extend the lead despite Cory Pelle's personal scoring barrage in the final stanza, as the Mustangs moved on to a Friday night engagement with Calvary Christian in the 10th Region "A" Semi-Finals with a 76-58 final.
