| In horse racing interviews often the winning jockey of a tiring horse will be told that if the race had gone another jump that he would have been beaten. A smart jockey will reply that the race was not the required distance and a jump, therefore he was the winner. |
| The Brossart Mustang Freshmen broke open a close game in the second half to post their sixth win against no losses in the young season. This was their first NKAC Conferenece Division II contest. Up 15-14 at the half, the Mustangs charged out of the locker-room and caught fire in the third period behind the hot hand of Jordan Armstrong who put up 7 of his game high 15 points in that decsisive 3rd Quarter. The Mustangs put the icing on the cake in the fourth period tagging the Cats 17-4, providing the Mustangs with their sixth win in a row and giving them a 1-0 record in conference play. Ten Freshmen Mustangs put ink in the scorebook, led by Armstrong's 15 and Jacob Rieger's 9. The freshmen Mustangs will host NKAC Conference opponent Holy Cross on Friday at 4:30pm as the tip-off game of a triple-header with the Indians. | Such was the case with the hard-luck St. Joseph, 8th Grade Bluejays who battled Newport in the Freshmen prelim game Mondat night in the SyDome. The Jays outscored the visitors 27-14 in the final quarter and were making a furious rush to the lead when the clock ran out. Were the game 24 minutes and 30 seconds, I think that we would be writing about a dramatic Bluejay come-from-behind victory. As is the Jays suffer a heart-breaking 44-42 loss over a very athletic Newport 8th Grade Team. St. Joe trailed 9-4 after one period, but battled back to make it a 13-9 Newport lead at intermission. Newport appeared to build an insurmountable lead during the third quarter, coasting to a 30-15 lead after three periods. It was then that the J's began their rally and the Wildcats began hearing footsteps. Chris Kelley led all Bluejay scorers with 12 on the night, with seven of those coming in the fourth quarter. Newport's 2 of 11 free-throw shooting nearly proved their undoing as the J's connected on 10 of 19 charity tosses. We thank Coach Tim Machenheimer's team for providing such an exciting prelim.
