Mustangs Sweep Cru In Home Opener Tripleheader Freshmen Impress 42-36 JVs Win 29th Straight - 31-20 Varsity Play Jekyll/Hyde - Prevail 72-63
New Era Mustangs Hot And Sometimes Not In Home Opener 72-63 Win Over Cru
An overflow student section celebrated Nerd Night for the 05-06 home opener, but perhaps a Survivor theme might have been more appropriate or maybe Jekyll and Hyde Night. After a feeling out period which saw the Mustangs overcome an early 4-7 deficit, the Stangs scored six unanswered to take a 10-7 lead and then extend that lead to 17-13 at the quarter stop. The Mustangs would outscore their opponents 18-5 midway through the third quarter to take a 35-18 lead and visions of a repeat of the Lloyd onslaught began to surface. However, Crusader Junior Brandon Lenhof was not about to allow his team to be blown out and took charge of the St. Henry offense, resulting in an eleven point second quarter output which included two long-range "3's" bringing his team back to trail by a 39-27 margain at halftime. Mustang big man Troy Cooper was money again tonight putting up 9 points in the first half but spent substantial time on the wood symied by foul trouble. St. Henry would further erode the Mustang lead throughout the 3rd quarter as Lenhoff and Ben Kuebbing combined for 12 points as the Cru would outscore the Mustangs 17-16 trimming the Stangs lead to eleven at 55-44. Cooper would counter with ten third stanza points holding the Cru at bay.
Down the stretch Lenhoff would continue his personal barrage adding eight points and rallying his team to within six at 64-58 late in the game, but the New Era Stangs were up to the task hitting their free-throws and putting the second ball of the season on the wall by a final of 72-63. Troy Cooper led the Mustangs again tonight with 23 points and Senior Brad Seiter put up 13 on two 3's, a bucket and 5 of 6 shooting from the line. Lenhoff victimized the Mustangs for 29 points and the 63 points given up represents the most yielded by a Brossart team since January 8th, 2004 when we were toppled by Pendleton County in the MCIT 69-62.
JV's Secure 29th Consecutive Victory With 31-20 Win
The JVs secured Coach Bob Rowe his 29th official consecutive JV victory with a 31-20 Volkswagon win over the Cru.as the Mustangs exploded for a 12-3 first period lead and never looked back, taking a 17-5 bulge to the locker room at halftime and cruised to their second win of the young season. Bryan Niemeyer led the JV Stangs with 11 points and was the game's only double figure scorer. The scoreboard read 33-20 when time expired but the scorers conferred and it was determined that the record books will show the score to read 31-20. The JVs will attempt to extend "The Streak" to 30 on Friday vs Campbell County.
Freshmen Impressive In Deceiving 42-36 NKAC Win To Improve To 3-0
St Henry was coming off of a sixteen point win over Dixie Heights on Monday night and were touted as one of the top freshmen teams in the 9th Region, but were tamed by the Mustang Freshmen 42-36 in a game that wasn't that close. Down 7-8 after a period the Stangs rallied to take a 21-14 lead to intermission and extended to 33-23 lead after three and with a 38-25 advantage and 4:17 to play in the game, Coach Mike Schack subbed liberally as the Cru closed to the final score. Matt Woeste led the home team with 11 points, Justin Barth who reminds me a bit of another Justin who played here, put up 9, and Tony Woeste who improves with each game tacked on 8.
