Sam Elsbernd Going Home To His Alma Mater, Named Head Coach of the Holmes Bulldogs
Coach Sam Elsbernd, who spent the past season a varsity assistant to Ben Franzen, has been named the head coach of the Holmes Bulldogs. Sam is a 2003 graduate of Holmes. He was on staff at Holmes from 2005 through 2009, when the Bulldogs were the 9th Region Champs three times, and were State Champs in ’09. He has extensive head coaching experience, serving in that capacity at Bracken County and Pendleton County.
Sam enjoyed his stint in our program and penned a group text to our team yesterday, when he learned of getting the Holmes job. In it he described his admiration for our players and our program, and shared his expectations of us “being the turnaround story in the 10th Region in 2024-25.”
In a post on Facebook, Sam stated, “Honored. Humbled. Excited. You name it, I’m feeling it! Holmes High School and the City of Covington is a very special place to me. I’ve been all around the world, but there is nowhere else I’d rather be than Covington, Kentucky and Holmes High School. It is a special place and I am very excited to return.”
We enjoyed having Sam as part of our season this past year. We are happy for Sam to get this opportunity at his Alma Mater and wish him nothing but the best, except on those nights when we meet in NKAC Division II competition.

Mustangs Launch Three home runs in defeating pendleton County 14-3 in five innings on Thursday, improving our season mark above .500 to to 10-9 for the first time this season.
Three Mustangs – Sophomores Isaac Amin and Ben Doyle, and Junior Luke Bertsch – hit the first varsity baseball home runs of their careers Thursday afternoon, as our Mustangs blasted Pendleton County 14-3 in five innings in Falmouth. Six different Mustangs have now hit round-trippers this season and as a team, we have accumulated 7 of them, in a season where my pre-season outlook stated that this team might lack the power seen a year ago when three players, led by Evan Moore (7) collected 11 home runs. I do not recall any time in our baseball past where we hit three home runs in the same game. It doesn’t mean that it hasn’t happened, but I follow baseball pretty closely and don’t remember it happening previously, at least in modern history. In addition to hitting a home run, Isaac Amin also contributed a double, scored twice and had 3 RBIs. Nate Geiman was 2-2 with a double, a pair of runs scored and 2 RBIs. Luke Bertsch went 2 for 3, with 2 RBIs, Ben Doyle knocked home 3 teammates, and Landon Ruth plated 2 others.
Alex Noe took care of business on the mound, going four complete innings, allowing 3 Runs (None Earned), on 3 hits, striking out 5 and walking 2 to earn the win. Noe improves to 3-2 on the season. Luke Bertsch closed it out with an inning of work in the 5th yielding a double which he would strand.
Our Mustangs will be be presented with a major opportunity for a signature win when Ryle comes to the friendly confines Friday at 55pm. The Raiders are on a heater, winning 10 of their last 11 outings, with a one-run loss, 6-5 to Great Crossing in the Doc Morris Tournament, the only blemish on their record since a pair of losses in Avon, Ohio back on April 6th. This will also serve as a prep for our district seeding showdown with Campbell County coming up on Monday at 5pm in Claryville Heights.
